Vote Labour – Andy Stokes, Ann Goulbourn & Patrick Howard

Vote Andy Stokes

I was elected to Buckfastleigh & Buckfast Town Council in 2015. I’m currently Chair of the Council & Mayor of Buckfastleigh. In four years we have radically transformed the Council, making it transparent and accountable, and involving residents fully in our work. We’ve raised money and supported local organisations to plug the gaps as National, County and District government have cut more and more services.

I’ve also campaigned actively:

  • to keep our libraries open
  • to keep Ashburton & Buckfastleigh Hospital in NHS hands
  • to reverse ward and hospital closures throughout Devon
  • to restore proper funding for our schools.

As one of your District Councillors, some of the areas I will focus on are over-development, public services, and the climate crisis…

Over-Development

I will continue to resist the housing development targets that are turning Teignbridge into a building site. We do need affordable homes for local people – we don’t need more second homes, traffic congestion, and pressure on services that are already cut to the bone!

Climate Emergency & Environmental Crisis

I’m the Secretary of Buck the Trend (Buckfastleigh Transition Town) and a lifelong activist against environmental destruction. On the District Council I will press for far-reaching action to prevent climate change and biodiversity loss, so our children can inherit a world fit to live in.

Public Services

I will resist cuts to our essential public services and strive to keep them out of the hands of private companies, so that your council tax goes into funding effective services and good jobs for local people, and not into shareholder profits. I’ll continue to support local organisations who are meeting the needs of our community.

Vote Ann Goulbourn

I am a retired Librarian who has lived in Buckfastleigh for twenty five years. I have been involved in the campaign to stop the closure of small local libraries and in Buck the Trend which campaigns for a sustainable future. I currently work as a volunteer on local history archives and I’m chair of Scorriton and Buckfastleigh Twinning Association.

I’m strongly opposed to the cuts in Government financial support to local authorities and want to see more money for affordable housing, health and essential services.

Vote Patrick Howard

As District Councillor I would vote:
To increase the stock of social housing, so that young people in Teignbridge can have homes of their own within their means
To make bus travel the most feasible, affordable and accessible choice of transportation for Teignbridge residents in both urban and rural areas
To improve and expand green spaces and public amenities, to protect funding for the arts, and afford all communities equal scope for leisure and recreation

I would vote against any measure to:
Pass on cuts imposed by Westminster to the poorest, youngest, oldest or most vulnerable among us.
Allow private profit to supersede the dignity, wellbeing or happiness of Teignbridge residents

These are red lines laid by Labour values, which are my values, and most probably your values too. With Labour as the rising force and dominant opposition in Central Devon, you don’t need to compromise.

The Conservative-run District Council have shown they will never stand up to their own Government in Westminster.

As your Labour member I promise to oppose public service cuts, fight for proper funding, and listen to local residents about the priorities for our area.

Labour are in second place behind the Tories in this constituency (latest figures from GE2017) and we offer a real alternative to decades of neglect, under-funding and self-interest. Time to take first place!
